Great British butchers (who just happen to be female…) Pt. 2 of 2

Length: 2 mins

So far, since last week, I’ve only been able to find this pair of English female butchers to add to last weeks post. And no news of anymore yet.

Kensal Rise, London, Brooks  Butchers has two young female butchers and they’re saying all the right things

Meet Emily Boyfield, 24, and Rosie Collingwood, 26. Rosie says:

“I came to London a year ago from South Africa to study food. I had my eye on the Leith school but cookery schools are so expensive.

“I begged them to let me learn here as butchery is a great way to learn about food and working with meat. Honestly it’s the best job I’ve ever had-it’s my passion and I love it. I get a kick out of it. It does take some people by surprise and some do go straight for the males to cut their meat. But most of our customers are so open and they love it too.”

Emily likewise is very comfortable in her work:

“It is seen as traditionally quite a masculine job and it does involve heavy duty lifting but for us it’s just not an issue- we laugh about it. There’s absolutely no squeamishness about it at all. I grew up in Rutland and I’ve been chucking and gutting pheasants since I was four years old – it’s actually my favourite thing to do”

But this can’t be the sum total in England. Can it? If you know of others, email me or comment here and I’ll update these posts to try & encourage others & publicise their work and their thoughts about the trade and their place in it and why they do what they do.
