Pottering ever onwards

Length: < 1 min

I am more than a little pleased with how this lovely piece looks after the firing yesterday. It’s come out pretty much exactly as I envisaged it (and a huge thanks again to Val for her patient guidance and ideas, most especially here for how to get the black lettering for the word SALT to appear so professionally). It’s all filled up, sitting next to the stove hob, ready to be used now…

A hand made ceramic salt-pig. The outside is a dark speckled blue, whilst the inside is a bright yellow. It’s shaped rather like a Dorade box on an old steam-ship. The main shot on the left shows it filled with small, perfectly formed crystals of white, kosher salt and there’s a spoon in the left hand image to give a feeling for the scale whilst the other shows the box of Kosher-brand salt, ready to fill it up. The drips running down the inside are by design, yes!

The outside is a dark speckled blue, to remind one of the sea from where the salt comes, whilst the inside is a bright yellow, both for contrast and also referencing sand on the beach. It’s shaped more than a little like a Dorade box, such as you’d see on an old steam-ship. The main shot on the left shows it filled with small, perfectly formed crystals of white, kosher salt — finest kind for cooks — and there’s a little tea-spoon sized wooden one visible in that same image, simply to give a feeling for the scale (as this salt-pig is designed for the hand to fit fully, to dive into, your fingers grabbing a proper ‘pinch’), whilst the other images shows the box of Kosher-brand salt, ready to fill it up.

And yes, fuck you, the drips running down the inside are by design!

  1. Chris, it’s an absolute triumph…….. I love it, and the story that goes with it.

    What’s the next project?
