Spam and Father…

Length: < 1 min

As long as Dad’s OK, eh?

I found an old poster for Hormel’s SPAM; the palette is predominantly red. It’s the main tone and main colour used. Chosen no doubt, to help to punch up the bright red of the ‘meat’ product that they’re trying to flog through these ads. to contrast with the bright yellow yolks. In the top left, in the break-out box it says:

“Life with Father is lots more fun since we found SPAM”.

There are other images of the “happy housewife”, from Illinois (her husband’s name used, no mention of her first name anywhere), who made this — no doubt, 100% true and verified — claim, her grumpy husband and shots of food inc. breakfast, sandwiches and burgers, all made with SPAM.

This is the 1950s/1960s looking at the dates and Mum’s left, of course, to make the SPAM dishes. That’s her job. Feeding her husband, respectfully calling him “Father” in front of the 2.4 kids, off-screen in these ads, but no doubt also demanding their food from their domestic slave whilst she’s also responsible for keeping the house “neat as a pin” clean. Making sure he “lights up”…

Jesus; what an horrendous time that must have been. No wonder “Mother’s Little Helper” was so popular.
