Where IS this place?

Length: 2 mins

A quote from Jess Ho; from her book “Raised By Wolves” which I’ve spoken about before (and not the TV series which is also worth your time as it shows the insanity of religious beliefs):

It’s unashamedly unapologetic, unpolished and rebellious. It is brash, impatient and always hungry. The food, no matter the money, no matter the produce, can’t be replicated anywhere else. “We know we’re good. If you don’t like the conditions which we provide, you can fuck off. And fuck you for wasting my time.” I am so down with that. I am more than willing to take my food with a side of abuse if it means excellent food and efficiency.

And where is this haven? You know what? It really doesn’t matter, what or where it i; that’s not the point here. It’s a state of mind; a state of place. You’ll know it (or them, if you’re lucky enough to know more than one such) when you find it…

Yesterday, I ate at Fin Boys in Cambridge. It too isn’t this singular place that Jess and I hanker for; but it’s bloody good food, nonetheless. I was lucky enough to get to eat there without a booking but I’d decided to get a lunch earlier in the day as I wasn’t sure that they’d have space for me when first asked to come back at 2pm.

En-route I came across this door-way; about 10″ high at the base of a wall against one of the university buildings. Not sure which one and as the colleges own most of the city, that’s not really that important anyway. Read “Sanctuary” by Dave Hutchinson for his take on their ‘learned’ monopoly (albeit, this is based in Oxford). Same difference. Just I was in the grubby old Fen town.

So, rather than running the risk of collapsing in the middle of Mill Road, I chose to err on the side of caution and grab a couple of beers

and a Scotch egg and lamb chop in town at the Pint Shop

before heading back to the fish butchery. I’m glad to to say that they did manage to squeeze me in; a seat at the window watching Mill Road life. Watched over by a fish water-jug…

This place is great; try it if you can.

I took the smoked eel mousse and the brill with a side of cavalo nero

The toilet continues the fish theme. This isn’t Josh Niland’s place but it’s a lot of fun and the food slaps!
