Saturday Night (Beneath the Plastic Palm Trees)…

Length: < 1 min

“Dancing to the rhythm of The Guns of Navarone
Found my Mecca near Tottenham Hale Station
I discovered heaven in the Seven Sisters Road…”

The Leyton Buzzards; a short-lived punk-era group that — whilst not quite a one-hit wonder — nevertheless didn’t really set the world on fire or go onto massive, stadium-filling levels of greatness. And yet, and yet,  I have a real fond spot for this single of theirs from 1979.

And it’s very germane (as as you’ll see from the Tube stations name-checked in the song), as a couple of the planned stop-off points for this next eating project, a project of sheer genius as it is and one which was suggested by Val. Natürlich!

The idea is to start at one end of the Victoria Line and eat from at least one great place at, or relatively near to, each station. And write all the time when not eating. Lots of writing. It’s not a road-trip, maybe a tube-tour? Certainly some walking involved. If I kick-off early one morning, with a breakfast dash to start the journey, I reckon I can get maybe 5 or 6 stops per day? Except I have to make a choice at each place. How do I choose e.g. at Nine Elms Market on a Sunday? Or all of Brixton? Or in and around Green Lanes…

Open to suggestions for any favourite places to try of course. It may help.

  1. Pimlico is the new(ish) home of my favourite London Italian restaurant, Enoteca Turi. A sad loss from Putney High Street
